Meet Laura Hallowell, Parent's Council Chair 2010-2011

Laura Hallowell

Laura Hallowell is the 2010-2011 Chair of the Parents' Council for Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi. Laura was born in New Jersey and raised in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. As a young adult, Laura went directly into the workforce for seven years as a production coordinator for Packard Press- a major East coast financial and legal printer. Laura also worked with the Mary Kay Company as a cosmetic consultant and successfully earned a car for top sales. Laura volunteered in numerous capacities with the American Red Cross winning an award for volunteer of the year in 1994. She has also volunteered with the Daisy Resource Center in Chicago for abused teenage girls, KBNJ 91.7 FM radio, and currently serves as the newsletter editor for her church. Laura enjoys long distance cycling, reading, and swimming during her free time. Laura has a true passion for philanthropy and strongly supports all of her children's schools and churches. Laura enjoys supporting her children and worthy causes for the greater good.

Laura married her childhood sweetheart Mark Hallowell and followed him as he pursued a career as a Naval Officer. Throughout 22 years of their 23 year marriage Laura moved their household a total of 8 times throughout Mark's Navy career. The Hallowell list of residencies included: overseas to Cuba, England, France, Puerto Rico, Canada, Mexico, New York, Florida, Arizona and Wyoming. Needless to say, Laura likes to travel!

Laura and Mark Hallowell have four children, Mark Jr., Todd, Shane, and Jessica. Jessica is currently a student in the College of Liberal Arts at Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi. Jessica enrolled as a full time student in 2009 and has enjoyed her time at the Island University very much.

Like most parents, Laura takes pride in her daughter's academic and extracurricular dedication. It is important to Laura that she stays engaged, well informed and connected not only to TAMU-CC but to Jessica's academic career. When Laura first learned that Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi is not a "state funded" university, but "state supported" she made the decision to get involved. Laura understands the significance of acting quickly and effectively to student needs. As the Parents' Council Chair, Laura serves as the voice for our countless, deserving students who earn opportunities and represent TAMU-CC nationally.

In this capacity, Laura is honored to represent all past, current, and future parents of TAMU-CC students. Through these difficult economic times- although our ability to financially meet the needs of deserving students might have decreased- let us remember that the need itself remains. Laura promises to work hard, raise funds, and to continue fighting for students who are presented with opportunities to bring recognition back to the TAMU-CC.
